Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cemalettin YILDIZ, a faculty member in the Primary School Mathematics Teacher Training program at Giresun University's Department of Mathematics Education, organized an online event titled "Stars of Mathematics: Female Mathematicians" for mathematics teachers and teacher candidates in Giresun on April 16, 2021. This event highlighted the significant contributions of women to the field of mathematics. Beginning his presentation by stating that contributions to mathematics are not solely made by male mathematicians, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cemalettin Yıldız said, "Today, there are many male and female mathematicians in the world of mathematics. If we only consider male mathematicians and make judgments about mathematics, then those judgments will not be based on solid ground. If we make judgments about mathematics without considering female mathematicians, we may end up with a blind spot and a crippled one." Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cemalettin Yıldız emphasized the scarcity, lack of appreciation, and lack of recognition of female mathematicians until the 20th century, explaining the reasons as societal and family pressure. Despite all these pressures, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cemalettin Yıldız emphasized that there are female mathematicians who have managed to leave their mark in the field of mathematics and shine like great stars, stating, “Undoubtedly, there are peak, star female mathematicians in the history of mathematics. But this is a flow. Those peaks become meaningful within this flow. When you consider them together, mathematics becomes more meaningful. There are hundreds of stars in the world of mathematics. They are the shining great stars of the world of mathematics.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yıldız also mentioned that female mathematicians have some distinct characteristics. Cemalettin Yıldız listed these characteristics as follows: “They are not afraid to stand up for their rights. They fight to change things they are dissatisfied with. They do what they set their minds to. They do things because they want to, not because they have to. They are not afraid of living alone. They do not make decisions based on the influence of others. They instantly cut ties with people who harm them. They know how to make time for themselves and start over when necessary. They are not afraid to start anew and do not easily compromise their own feelings and thoughts. They are knowledgeable and sincere. They marry because they truly want to, not because they have to. They fight like warriors in the face of difficulties.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cemalettin Yıldız also shared the names of some female mathematicians who left their mark on the world of mathematics and their contributions to the science of mathematics. She shared some names and life stories of figures such as Hypatia (370-415), Maryam al-Usturlabi (10th century), Lubna of Cordoba (10th century), Sophie Germain (1776-1831), Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya (1850-1891), Amelia Emmy Noether (1882-1935), Nüzhet Toydemir Gökdoğan (1910-2003), Suzan Kahramaner (1913-2006), Hülya Şenkon (1941-2008), Keti Tenenblat (1944-Izmir), Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017), and Prof. Dr. Esra Bukova Güzel with the participants.
